US CONSUL GENERAL Edward M. ALFORD SPEAKS TO LIBERAL INTERNATIONAL:Consul General Edward Alford briefed approximately 97 members and friends of the Frankfurt Chapter of Liberal International on President Obama’s policies and their impact on transatlantic relations in a well-attended evening function at the Deutsche Bank offices in Frankfurt am Main on March 10, 2010.
In his remarks, the Consul General outlined the history of Anglo-Saxon liberal thinking and its influence on the creation of the United States, as well as its influence on current policy. Consul General Alford discussed the need for transatlantic solidarity in Afghanistan, and in negotiations with Iran.
Many of the members of the Liberal International had just come from visiting a military base (Tornado Jagdbombergeschwader 33 der Bundesluftwaffe in Büchel ) and were well aware of the nuclear non-proliferation issue. Climate change was also among the topics discussed and provoked some lively questions.
Hessen’s Deputy Minister President Jörg-Uwe Hahn concluded the session with comments contrasting the effective coalition government in Hessen with the press reports of less harmonious relations in Berlin.
